A Wal-Mart Kind of Day 14
Pictures from yesterday:
Today was a much better day for all of us. Catherine woke up at about 5:30 and started to play in her crib, something she has done every morning. We let her play and she ends up going back to sleep within a 1/2 hour. We let her sleep until 8am today because we were going to do some running around town and we didn’t want her to be completely wiped out. She woke up in a wonderful mood.
We needed to get a few things so our guide Peter took all of us on a tram to Wal-Mart across town. Oh my gosh what a total experience that was! It was so amazing to see familiar signs and advertising but have kiosks of meats and dim sum and other Chinese foods. There were very few things that were familiar there but we just loved looking at all of the different types of products that they had. It’s also several stories and instead of have escalators to each floor, they have people movers that go up…like a moving hill. Once you roll your cart onto it, it sticks and you can’t move it. There is a person at the top and bottom of each people mover to help you on and off.
We decided to go ahead and get a stroller because our backs and arms are really getting sore. We also were hoping that riding in a stroller at times would be soothing. So we found this really cute one that collapses pretty easily. She loved it in the store and then once we were outside, she hated it and wanted to be held. She loves, loves, loves to be held and we want to hold her as much as possible but we get tired out after a few hours.
After Wal-Mart we went to the Chongqing Zoo across the street from Wal-Mart. The landscaping of the park was just beautiful but most of the animal habitats were pitiful. I was just heartbroken to see some of them in their pens. We didn’t walk the whole zoo because Catherine had fallen asleep and we were tiring pretty quickly but we did manage to take in a few animals including their panda exhibit.
This is a baby panda sleeping. She’s so cute!
This is my baby panda sleeping, she’s even cuter!
After the zoo we headed back to our hotel to rest for the rest of the afternoon. Our guide had to go pick up all of our paperwork so we had to fend for ourselves on getting back to the hotel. We decided to take a cab and let me tell you I thought we were going to die several times! There really aren’t any distinguished, marked lanes and everyone just pushes themselves in front of the other. We were pinned in between three buses at one point and I swear I thought I saw my life passing before my eyes! We managed to make it back though in one piece!
We decided on a McDonalds dinner tonight. We are getting a little tired of all of the ethnic foods we have tried and decided to go a little more American. Catherine has only been drinking bottles and refuses to eat anything by spoon or mouth until she saw my french fries. I gave her a little piece and she made the funniest faces and then she grabbed at them again. I gave her a little piece and she ate it as best as she could. We were so excited but thought it was pretty funny that her first solid food was a McD’s fry. She also ate a little bite of hamburger bun and then was done. I am having a hard time posting those photos, so I am going to put them in a seperate post.
Tomorrow is our last full day here in Chongqing before we head to Guangzhou. We have several cool things planned.
Thank you for all of your sweet comments and all of your encouragement. Catherine is such a joy and we are really bonding quite well. She is adjusting a lot better than I expected, she just has a very hard time with bedtime. I hope it eases over time.

So glad to hear that today was a better day! I’m sure each day things will get a little better.
I’ve heard way too many horror stories about the driving in China. Not looking forward to that experience at all

She is so pretty! Love the fact that you two have just jumped into it with both feet and such open arms. Everyday will bring more smiles for Catherine as you all get to know each each other. Just keep plodding along with a night time routine, the same each night and she will adjust. Keep taking tons of pictures, that time can never be recaptured!

Oh my! She is just the cutest little thing ever! She looks much more peaceful and content in her pictures now. You’re doing a great job of settling in with her
That’s funny about the McDonald’s fries

That’s a great update! The other thing to remember about bedtime, is that Catherine might be missing her friends from the orphanage. She lost Emily a month ago, and then her crib neighbors this week. It’s probably too quiet, as she was used to hearing the other kids crying, soothing, “singing,” etc. However, I have no doubt that in Guangzhou, she will turn a corner, and then when you come home, too. Every change in the environment (like the upcoming change in hotels), while stressful to her and yourselves, result in moments that reinforce bonding and attachment.

Awww, she’s so beautiful! And I love that she wanted to try the fry. She’s definitely part of the family!

Shelly and I can totally relate to the McDonald’s thing….When Crystall and Kaylee were both 2 hours old her grandfather gave them McDonald’s milk shake. I know part of you just rolls your eyes at the thought of McDonald’s, at least we did.

Kev and I can relate to the sore backs and tired feet. The kids get heavy to carry, but that is what they love. I have been praying that Catherine would feel your love right away and bond quickly, all that concern for nothing =) She loves you. You are off to a great start as great parents. As far as the McD’s stuff goes… the fries are Crystall’s favorite too.

She’s so beautiful and it’s just heartwarming to see her in your arms. I know how long and hard the road was to get to these girls but it makes every moment (even the hard ones) even sweeter.
The sleeping will get better. It didn’t for us until we got home but it was so much better once we got settled and in a routine. Don’t sweat it too much and just keep in mind that it will pass.
A hint: When things get too rough in Guangzhou just remember that there is a Starbucks only a couple of blocks from the WS. Many nights I cried (which upset her more) because I didn’t know how to soothe Ava so DH would try to settle her while I would walk over for hot chocolate and a bit of quiet to calm my nerves. Never underestimate the power of chocolate and quiet (and the company of other parents doing the exact same thing).

She’s just so beautiful!
And I can see the difference in your pics from day to day. She seems more relaxed and peaceful in each new set.

I’ve been following your blog along, I linked onto it off of rumer queen. Your duaghter is the most beautiful little thing. That head full of dark hair and her procelin skin. what a beautiful family you make!
It’s been almost 4 years since our then 18 month came home with us so I love to follow new adventures whenever I can. I love your daughter’s hair, our daughter had pretty much a shaved head, imagine at 18 months old and almost bold so I admire the beautiful head of hair and her sweet tiny face! God bless you all on your China journey and your journey as a family of 3! congrats!
Oh one more thing, when we shopped at Wal-mart I bought, of all things, a bundle of dish towels which sounds funny. By buying something like that, every time I use it, almost everyday, it brings me back to our journey — just something to think about as your shopping around — I love to see the tag all written in Chinese.
Enjoy! Sue Jerue, Milford, CT
