A Wal-Mart Kind of Day 14

Today was a much better day for all of us.  Catherine woke up at about 5:30 and started to play in her crib, something she has done every morning.  We let her play and she ends up going back to sleep within a 1/2 hour.  We let her sleep until 8am today because we were going to do some running around town and we didn’t want her to be completely wiped out.  She woke up in a wonderful mood.

We needed to get a few things so our guide Peter took all of us on a tram to Wal-Mart across town.  Oh my gosh what a total experience that was!  It was so amazing to see familiar signs and advertising but have kiosks of meats and dim sum and other Chinese foods.  There were very few things that were familiar there but we just loved looking at all of the different types of products that they had.  It’s also several stories and instead of have escalators to each floor, they have people movers that go up…like a moving hill.  Once you roll your cart onto it, it sticks and you can’t move it.  There is a person at the top and bottom of each people mover to help you on and off.

We decided to go ahead and get a stroller because our backs and arms are really getting sore.  We also were hoping that riding in a stroller at times would be soothing.  So we found this really cute one that collapses pretty easily.  She loved it in the store and then once we were outside, she hated it and wanted to be held.  She loves, loves, loves to be held and we want to hold her as much as possible but we get tired out after a few hours.

After Wal-Mart we went to the Chongqing Zoo across the street from Wal-Mart.  The landscaping of the park was just beautiful but most of the animal habitats were pitiful.  I was just heartbroken to see some of them in their pens.  We didn’t walk the whole zoo because Catherine had fallen asleep and we were tiring pretty quickly but we did manage to take in a few animals including their panda exhibit.

After the zoo we headed back to our hotel to rest for the rest of the afternoon.  Our guide had to go pick up all of our paperwork so we had to fend for ourselves on getting back to the hotel.  We decided to take a cab and let me tell you I thought we were going to die several times!  There really aren’t any distinguished, marked lanes and everyone just pushes themselves in front of the other.  We were pinned in between three buses at one point and I swear I thought I saw my life passing before my eyes!  We managed to make it back though in one piece!

We decided on a McDonalds dinner tonight.  We are getting a little tired of all of the ethnic foods we have tried and decided to go a little more American.  Catherine has only been drinking bottles and refuses to eat anything by spoon or mouth until she saw my french fries.  I gave her a little piece and she made the funniest faces and then she grabbed at them again.  I gave her a little piece and she ate it as best as she could.  We were so excited but thought it was pretty funny that her first solid food was a McD’s fry.  She also ate a little bite of hamburger bun and then was done.  I am having a hard time posting those photos, so I am going to put them in a seperate post.

Tomorrow is our last full day here in Chongqing before we head to Guangzhou.  We have several cool things planned.

Thank you for all of your sweet comments and all of your encouragement.  Catherine is such a joy and we are really bonding quite well.  She is adjusting a lot better than I expected, she just has a very hard time with bedtime.  I hope it eases over time.
